troubled glasgow

Last night I watched the movie "Ratcatcher" (dir. by Lynne Ramsay, 1999) which is set during Scotland's national garbage strike of the mid-1970's. The movie explores the experiences of a poor adolescent boy as he struggles to reconcile his dreams of leaving his neighborhood.
It was so well done--candid performances and beautiful imagery. There is a sequence of shots that I just can't get out of my mind which involved a boy reaching for a comb from his pocket in order to hurt someone. Next shot cuts to a close up of a deep red strawberry sauce dripping down a girl's ice cream.
Although this isn't the scene I am talking about, I'll leave you with this elusive, yet stunning, image which will hopefully make you want to see this movie!

although sad, and in some cases disturbing, it has its bits of humor and is indeed fantastic.
